I’ve been studying the phenomenon of Flat Earth or Biblical Cosmology since the beginning of 2023 and have been fascinated by the topic.
Listen with commentary on the Flat Out Hope Podcast here.
My friend Gretchen Flores kept sharing memes about fake space, satalloons, NASA’s connection with the occult, water above the firmament, the true nature of stars, and other interesting ideas that were far outside the norm of comfortable. I honestly thought she was losing it.
However, I started to read Genesis chapter one with fresh eyes and observe the sky and moon cycles with renewed interest.
Finally, in early 2023, I asked Gretchen to send me her best stuff. I had to get inside the head of a true believer.
An Insatiable Itch
You see, I had an itch that needed to be scratched. I wasn't like most seekers who study Flat Earth intending to disprove it once and for all. Instead, I wanted to see if there was any validity to the idea. I’m not afraid of the truth. If the earth is a globe as I’ve been taught my entire life, I knew the facts would pan out.
You might wonder if I considered whether the governments could collude together in such a big lie.
Well…I had just lived through one of the biggest deceptions of all time…the Pandemic.
If the powers that be, governmental agencies, and mainstream media were able to turn the world upside and deceive the masses over a virus with a death rate close to the flu (if you don’t know what I mean, watch The High Wire), why couldn’t they deceive the world about the shape of the earth? They already had the world believing the lies of evolution and the Big Bang. Why not add Flat Earth to the list?
Follow the Bible
Another factor that played into my decision to research Flat Earth was my commitment to follow the Bible wherever it took me — so long as the conclusions were based on sound hermeneutics with Scripture interpreting Scripture.
I couldn’t shake the idea of the firmament separating the waters above from the waters below. Though I had been taught the water canopy theory — and it seemed logical — I had to investigate further. Btw — John Calvin held to the idea that the water above the firmament was simply the clouds and atmosphere in the upper sky. This seemed reasonable too. The one thing that held me back from this view was the fact there was no rain before the flood.
Martin Luther, on the other hand, maintained that there were literal waters above the firmament — and to deny that fact would be to deny Scripture.1 I filed these ideas in my brain as I studied the taboo topic of Flat Earth.
Warning: You don’t have to believe the earth is flat to be labeled insane. All you have to do is research it or talk about it. And then there’s the censorship. What’s up with that?
I mean — if Flat Earth is so obviously FAKE — why would Google, YouTube, and other Social Media giants need to warn me about it?
Felt like 2020 all over again.
Sun-Centered or Earth-Centered?
One of the first Flat Earth videos I watched was called Heliosorcery: Exposing the Occult Origins of Heliocentricity. Though it didn’t directly address the shape of the earth, it did discuss the idea of heliocentrism versus geocentrism. Basically — does the Earth revolve around the sun or does the sun revolve around the Earth? Is the sun the center of the universe — or the earth?
Again — back to Genesis One. First God created the light. Next the firmament. Then on day three, the dry land appeared. On day four, God placed the sun, moon, and stars in the firmament.
Hmm…made me think.
What spoke to me most in this video was the idea of “learning against learning.” Heliosorcery presented the idea that up until the Protestant Reformation, everyone KNEW the sun moved around the earth and that the earth was stable.
According to the video, Martin Luther and John Calvin vehemently opposed heliocentrism. Calvin called it demonic and Luther unbiblical. I had to verify these quotes.
And did.
Out of the Mouth of Protestors
Consider the words of the famous Reformer noted for
Nailing the 95 Theses on the castle door in Wittenberg that set in motion the Protestant Reformation;
Standing against the Roman Catholic Church on pain of death at the Diet of Worms; and
Translating the New Testament into common German and distributing it en masse through the Gutenberg Press.
Here’s what he said:
There was mention of a certain new astrologer who wanted to prove that the earth moves and not the sky, the sun, and the moon. This would be as if somebody were riding on a cart or in a ship and imagined that he was standing still while the earth and the trees were moving. [Luther remarked,] “So it goes now. Whoever wants to be clever must agree with nothing that others esteem. He must do something of his own. This is what the fellow does who wishes to turn the whole of astronomy upside down. Even in these things that are thrown into disorder I believe the Holy Scriptures, for Joshua commanded the sun to stand still and not the earth [Joshua 10:12]. — Martin Luther 2
Now consider the words of the Reformer most noted for writing the enduring and faithful Institutes of the Christian Religion and transforming Swiss culture by teaching the people how to apply biblical principles to all of life.
The Christian is not to compromise so as to obscure the distinction between good and evil, and is to avoid the errors of those dreamers who have a spirit of bitterness and contradiction, who reprove everything and pervert the order of nature. We will see some who are so deranged, not only in religion but who in all things reveal their monstrous nature, that they will say that the sun does not move, and that it is the earth which shifts and turns. When we see such minds we must indeed confess that the devil posses them, and that God sets them before us as mirrors, in order to keep us in his fear. So it is with all who argue out of pure malice, and who happily make a show of their impudence. When they are told: “That is hot,” they will reply: “No, it is plainly cold.” When they are shown an object that is black, they will say that it is white, or vice versa. Just like the man who said that snow is black; for although it is perceived and known by all to be white, yet he clearly wished to contradict the fact. And so it is that they are madmen who would try to change the natural order, and even to dazzle eyes and benumb their senses. — John Calvin 3
What Have We Forgotten?
Both Luther and Calvin loved the sciences. They were not ignorant of astronomy, but rather, I believe, they understood something we have forgotten. Namely, that the Roman Catholic Church hates Protestantism. Rome did not want the Bible in the hands of ordinary people. When they saw they could not keep the Bible out of the hands of the plowboys and scullery maids — they decided to take a different approach: Learning against learning.
Rome, with the help of the Jesuits, created a philosophy of learning (science so-called) that appeared scholarly but was aimed at turning the hearts of the Protestants (and the world) away from the Bible (learning against learning) and back to Rome. As a reminder, Roman Catholicism is an antichrist system — which, btw, is why the Westminster divines called the Pope the AntiChrist in our beloved Confession of Faith.
Who Are the Jesuits?
Seventeen years after Luther published his 95 Theses, Ignatius Loyola founded the Order of the Jesuits. Six years later, in 1540, Pope Paul III approved their Society as an official part of Rome. This group of men was so bent on evil, they were kicked out of many nations for their subterfuge. Their goal was to carry out whatever was necessary to uphold the Catholic religion and destroy Protestantism. The Jesuits have infiltrated churches, denominations, religions, schools, universities, sciences, NASA, and every other field of study to this day. Their MO is to become the best of the best to all men so they can win souls away from Christ and to Rome (antichrist).
May I commend you to read The Secret Instructions of the Jesuits to learn more?4
The popularization of heliocentricism through Roman Catholic, Nicolas Copernicus, was an early work of the Jesuit order (also called the Society of Jesus). This easily explains why Calvin and Luther so violently opposed the idea that the Earth moved and not the sun. They understood the spirit behind the heliocentric doctrine. And its origins have more of a foundation in the occult and scientism than in the scientific method, despite what we’ve been led to believe. Sadly, Copernicus’ teaching has stuck, and the warnings of Calvin and Luther have been ignored.
Explaining Calvin and Luther
Today, Reformed folks call Calvin and Luther scientifically-challenged for their old-world views — claiming if they were alive today, they would repudiate their inane claims of yesteryear. For example, Keith Mathison, author of Postmillennialism: An Eschatology of Hope, writes of Luther, “It did not occur to him that the conflict could be a conflict between a correct interpretation of God’s creation and his fallible interpretation of Scripture.”5 In other words, Luther was interpreting the Bible through the archaic science of his day.
In the Calvin Theological Journal, Robert White concludes that Calvin was “a prisoner to geocentrism.” And that “Calvin’s mistake — the mistake of his age — lay in assuming that astronomy could advance, like other sciences, on the basis of observation alone…” and that “Geocentrism came clothed…with all the majesty of ancient opinion…since it accorded fully with universal common sense”6 but not with science, as is implied.
Could there be more to this story than meets the eye?
Why Another Flat Earth Podcast?
I’ve started this brand new substack and podcast, Flat Out Hope, because I believe Reformed folks should own Flat Earth and not scoff at it. Whether they own it by clearly demonstrating it is a false system — by understanding and refuting the actual arguments of Flat Earth proponents and discussing them intellectually and with grace — or own it by acknowledging the validity of Flat Earth if it exists and steering its proponents toward solid Reformed theology and Hopeful eschatology.
Flat Earth believers not only believe that their position is biblical, but they also maintain that it is the only system that works based on true science. So — to discount a flat earther on either count (saying their position is not biblical or scientific) will only make them smile (hopefully) and walk away.
You might be surprised to know that there is a plethora of pseudoscience and faulty assumptions in the globe camp — much like in evolution and the Big Bang theory (also started by a Jesuit and taught by NASA).
As it stands, Reformed people, en masse, reject Flat Earth. This author concludes that these claims are made without a thorough investigation of all the facts. It seems instead, Flat Earth rejectors make hasty conclusions, listening to the lies of the Flat Earth Society; accepting the conclusions of their trusted friend, pastor, or scholar; not investigating the claims of the debunkers through the lens of a Flat Earth believer; or they are infiltrators who want to muddy the waters and lead people astray.
It is my strong opinion once again, that if Reformed folks would actually listen to Flat Earth believers — they could either truly debunk their claims or at least gain an understanding of WHY they believe what they believe.
The first to plead his case seems just, until another comes and examines him.
Sheep in Need of Good Shepherds
The Flat Earth space NEEDS sound theology. Many atheists and on-the-fencers are coming to Christ once they discover that the scientific evidence points to a Flat Earth, created by a loving Creator.
Sadly, these truth-seekers are being discipled by wolves.
Here are the leaders in the Flat Earth movement:
Doom and Gloom Dispensationalists
Seventh Day Adventists
Hebrew Roots
Hyper-Preterists
Spiritualists
Trinity Deniers
False Messiahs
It’s time for Reformed pastors, theologians, and laymen to step into the fray and get to know how God created this realm we call Earth, be able to soundly defend the globe (if that’s their reality), and understand the arguments of those coming to believe in Flat Earth.
Fledgling Flat Earth sheep need solid shepherds to watch over their souls.
